Best Practices

The following rules apply to all student orientation groups looking to create merchandise:

  • Student OCs are granted permission and encouraged to use the University and divisional names and marks while creating their merchandise, to strengthen their ties with their respective institutional brands.
  • Merchandise for student orientation week that includes an official U of T signature, University name or letter mark must be ordered through an approved licensed vendor.
  • Seek consultation from your respective communication office or Trademark Licensing to ensure you are in compliance with branding guidelines.

If you are unsure what marks to use for your department/program, please contact the Trademark Licensing Office.

Quick Tips

Please avoid the following:

  • All artwork created should be original in design that have no striking resemblance to existing trademarks to avoid legal action from external parties.
  • Student orientations committees are not permitted to make individual profit off the sale of university branded merchandise.
  • Student orientation designs should clearly indicate it is for orientation purposes. This requirement allows the student group to represent itself and avoids any confusion from representing the University, faculty or department. Alternatively, OCs can use their anticipated graduating year (e.g. Class of 202_) to signify a student group design.
