Student Governments, Councils and Unions (SGCU)

SGCU recognition is campus specific and applying is available through the Scarborough Campus Students’ Union (UTSC), the University of Toronto Mississauga Students’ Union (UTM), and the University of Toronto Students’ Union (St. George). Each union has their own recognition process and offers their own suite of services to course unions, including funding opportunities. Additionally, SGCU, can also have recognition status at more than one U of T campus so long as the group successfully applies and fulfills the requirements of each campus.

Best Practices

The following rules apply to all Student Governments, Councils and Unions looking to create merchandise:

  • Student Governments, Councils and Unions are required to successfully complete the Student Group Recognition application and appear on the Student Organization Portal.
  • As a student government, council or union, you are permitted to use the official university marks and signatures on merchandise.
  • Use of U of T and divisional marks in conjunction with the SGCU designs MUST be ordered through a licensed supplier and approved by Trademark Licensing.
  • SGCUs may hold a sale of departmental branded merchandise so long as the sale is limited in scope, temporary, makes little to no profit, and any profit realized is reinvested back into the clubs activities.
  • Seek consultation from your respective communication office or Trademark Licensing to ensure you are in compliance with branding guidelines.
  • Student groups are encouraged to strengthen their connection to the university by using the official colours of navy blue (PMS 655) and white, grey or black.

If you are unsure what marks to use for your department/program, please contact the Trademark Licensing Office.
